The Queen of Comedy of Tamil cinema for several decades since the 1960s, Aachi Manorama, age 78, died from a cardiac arrest on Saturday, October 10 in Chennai, India.
Although peerless for her comedic talents, she also played serious roles in several films, especially in her latter years.
The versatile actress had acted in more than 1,200 films including Hindi, Malayalam and Telugu films. She appealed to both young and old and had worked with nearly every prominent actor during her time in the South Indian cinema scene.
When she crossed the 1000-film milestone, it was recognised in the Guinness Book of World Records. Her comedic improvisations, witty charm as well as slapstick humour made her one of the greatest icons of the Tamil silver screen.
